PMOS Symptoms: Signs of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
PMOS is the new name for PCOS. The name changed partly because the condition affects much more than the ovaries — and many women went years without a diagnosis because their symptoms did not match the old "cysts" idea. Here are the signs to know.
Cycle and fertility signs
- Irregular, infrequent or missing periods
- Long cycles (over 35 days)
- Trouble ovulating or getting pregnant
Hormone and skin signs
- Extra hair growth on the face, chest or stomach
- Adult acne
- Thinning hair on the scalp
Metabolic signs
- Weight gain, especially around the middle, or difficulty losing weight
- Strong sugar cravings and energy crashes
- Dark, velvety skin patches (a sign of insulin resistance)
Mental health
Anxiety, low mood and poor body image are more common in women with PMOS. These are real parts of the condition, not something you are imagining.
What to track before your appointment
Doctors diagnose PMOS from a combination of irregular cycles, signs of high androgens and sometimes ultrasound or blood tests. Bringing a record helps:
- Your period start dates and cycle length for at least three months
- Symptoms like acne, hair changes, cravings and mood
- Any recent lab results
The free Nourished period tracker lets you log flow, mood and symptoms with no sign-up, so you have it all in one place.
Where to go from here
A diagnosis is a starting point. My book, PCOS Metabolic Reset, shows how food, movement and daily habits can support the metabolic side of PMOS — the side the new name finally puts first.
